our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america. wgn's randy belesomo is live outside the 18th police district with details. >>> good afternoon. the man is now being held here in the 18th district lock up after police caught him raping the young woman. sources tell us that he terrorized his victim. the incident happened at 11:30 last night at 1100 block of west dicons near depaul. police say the attacker is 19 years old. lives on the south side and sources say he has been known -- is a known sexual predator. victim is a 28-year-old woman. her neighbor called police when he found a purse on the back stairway of their apartment building. when police arrived they noticed an open wingdo and found the woman being raped inside. we spoke with the sister of the young man who called for help when he spotted the victim's handbag. >> what he thought it was maybe someone stolen the purse, came back here to go through and then left and then he saw the window and wasn't sure why that was kind of creepy. >> reporter: the woman was transported to northwestern memorial hospital
afternoon, i'm steve sanders. >> i'm allison payne. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america. wgn's julian crews is live at police headquarters with more on the march. julian? >> reporter: good afternoon. the protest just ended a short while ago having lasted less than two hours. now mayor richard m. daley is on the record supporting his police superintendent, but the mayor's recent decision to step aside leaves jody weis in limbo with his contract set to expire in a growing number of people clamoring for his resignation. >> some people better rise up to the occasion and start talking to mayor daley and say, listen what we are doing is not working. >> this isn't good for us and not for the citizens of chicago. >> we need to begin the search now for the new superintendent. this superintendent's contract is up on february 1. we shouldn't be wasting time until the last moment. >> harsh word for a vulnerable jody weis. embattled police superintendent is hearing it from all sides from chicago aldermen urging him to resign and from rank and file patrolmen
in for steve sanders. >> i'm allison payne. we welcome our views -- viewers who are waving us around the country on wgn america. muriel clair is live with our top story. >> 60-year-old ofelia garcia and 37-year-old maria garcia in this case both whom are in custody walked into the courtroom this morning calmly looking out at the crowd of spectators to connect with family and friends who may be among them. and garcia immediately connected with someone and began smiling and waiving and blowing kisses before she finally took her seat at the defense table. garcia and her co-defendant, 37- year-old maria garcia overra are charged with planning an acid attack on espiranza medina and hiring three teenagers to carry it out. it happened in july of 2008. victim espiranza medina, a social worker was on her way to work at 6:00 a.m. when the three teenagers confronted her and threw battery acid in her face. craig enderson, the assistant states attorney said during closing arguments he asked how did three teenagers in cicero end up in logan square at 6:30 a.m. just in time to attack the victim? th
are watching us around the country on wgn america. wgn's judy wang is live in roseland with our top story. >> good afternoon. michael pierce's family says that they had a shotgun in the house for protection. they purchased it legally and had it locked up. the boys found the key. pierce's 14-year-old brother remains in custody. >> we were going to miss michael. michael was blessing to us for 12 years. we don't know how we will make it without him. >> reporter: michael pierce's family adopted him when he was four months old. his mother found him in the family's home on east 130 place last night. the 12-year-old was lying at bottom of the basement stairs with gunshot wounds to his head. pierce was pronounced dead about half hour after he was found. investigators say the evidence suggests this shooting was an accident. no charges have been filed. >> it had to be because they were like twins. they was -- when you saw one, you saw the other. they ran, played back and forth, up and down the block with rollers. whether those roller skates -- just fun kids. >> saw them last week sitting on the por
